Spaghetti
One of our beginning level English classes was studying food words. In an effort to put their language skills to real life use we hosted a spaghetti dinner after class. Half the class opted to eat their spaghetti with chopsticks while the other half attempted a fork. When we asked the 10 class members how many of them were eating spaghetti for the first time, everyone of them raised their hand. We then went around the table and asked each student, in English, what their favorite food was. Eight out of ten of them said, “spaghetti is my favorite food.” I couldn’t tell if we made really good spaghetti, or if that was the only thing they knew how to say in English. Either way, the spaghetti dinner was a big hit. The final evidence was that there was nary a noodle to found on any child’s plate at the end of dinner.
