International Student Ministry - By the Numbers

ACMI
Here are some things I learned at the ACMI conference about the international student population in America:
- There are over 700,000 international students studying in the US (This number does not count visiting scholars, so if you include them you are getting very close to a million).
- 194,000 of them are from China, a number which has increased 20% every year for the past 6 years.
- India is second (100,000), South Korea is third (72,000), and I was shocked when I learned...
- ...Saudi Arabia is 4th on the list (34,139).
- Iran is the 2nd fastest growing group (behind only Saudi Arabia)
- 64% of international students’ funding is personal.
- International students add $22 billion a year to the US economy.
- Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” The greek word translated here hospitality is φιλοξενία (philoxenia). This word literally means to “love foreigners”. Many of you read these numbers politically or academically. If we look at them through the lens of Hebrews 13 we should see them as an exciting opportunity to live out God’s call in our own backyard!
- If you want to find the international student data for wherever you live you can go to the IIE website
