We Didn't Have Any Turnips, So...
Did you know that in Ireland they used to carve turnips instead of pumpkins? In America we changed the tradition to carving pumpkins because they were bigger, more abundant on this continent, and the seeds taste better when sprinkled with salt, baked, and enjoyed with your World Series.
Last Friday we taught a large group of international students and scholars how to carve a pumpkin without carving off your thumb. We carved a dozen pumpkins, baked seeds with salt, Lowry’s, and cinnamon and sugar, then lit the candles and turned off the lights to the oooh’s and aaahhh’s of the international crowd. Every single student I asked said this was their first time ever carving a pumpkin. I promise it won’t be their last!
BTW - We didn't lose any thumbs in the process either.
