Wednesday's Update
Here is today's update from Fangshan, again written by our South African sister (btw, Tera is her cat):
Hi All and thank you for your thoughts,
Todays update on fang shan is not very eventful. The forecast is saying it is going to rain hard again today and for the next few days. I think everyone is a little afraid of the rain now and with good reason, it is powerful and it damages things. It flipped my fridge and cars on the high way.
I was thankful to have some foreign friends and a chinese brother join me today. For the 2 and a half hours it took to get there, we only stayed 2 and half hours before turning back. It is hot down there and so "smelling-ly" dirty. We had to sit on the trampoline to eat lunch cause there is nowhere to sit. The longer the wet stuff sits the more chances for things to grow. Please p for the staff's health and all the volunteers too. There is potential for mold and disease to grow. The staff would not let me take clothes away, that got wet or any bedding. They said it is not good any more. It smells not good any more ;)
I went to check out my classroom but the kindergarden parents and teachers did it all yesterday. Lots of stuff lost but still a fair amount there. i didn't bother with it today but will go take stock later.
We mostly just finished in my room and filled sacks with sand and mud, tied them and put them up as barriers, at all 3 of the schools entrances, in the drizzling rain. Just before we were told to get out of fang shan before the roads got bad. We actually used the subway out again today, which is almost all the way in to the city now... but not connected to other subway lines yet.
I have taken two loads of stuff back with me now and I am so thankful I only had two rooms of stuff. If I had any more space I just may have filled it with more stuff. I am thankful for my stuff but this is a good exercise in downsizing. Some things to give thanks for... 1. The kids both in the knd and training school were not there during the flood 2. None of the septic tanks collapsed from rain this time. 3. Nobody was hurt or injured. 4. Tons of people have come out to help clean up. 5. I got to downsize before I move out and 6. Terra was not there ;)
It is sad to see all that has been put into this place ruined and so quickly. We are waiting on the leadership to decide if we move or stay. So cleaning has stopped for now. Also because of the rain warning..but they mostly they are just throwing away stuff for now... right across the street on the trash pile and people less fortunate come by and pick it up, on their bikes, like treasures. That breaks my heart to wonder what little they have to think that stuff is worth taking.
Well thanks for the thoughts. I'll let you know when more happens. Or keep informed on Jared's Face book for more info on how to help the school.
