Gugong (aka The Forbidden City, aka The Imperial Palace)

As a part of the holiday weekend the family went to Gugong (The Forbidden City). Built from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 surviving buildings with 8,707 bays of rooms and covers 720,000 square metres (7,800,000 square feet). The Emperor of China lived at Gugong from 1420 until 1924 (thanks wikipedia). The sheer magnitude combined with the perfect and intricate details make Gugong a must see if you ever come to China.
Sprite should pay us for this one.

all 8,707 of the rooms are decorated with this amount of detail. This is just the small corner of one door.

this is looking up at the ceiling of the red pagoda in the previous photo.
One could easily get lost in the back hallways.
